My 7 year old wears a Women's Small

Okay---now I am steamed. I was back-to-school shopping last week (of course, I was late as I am WT). Getting kids clothes, picking through the remains of summer stuff since it's so hot. Saw some women's shirts---my 7 year old girl grabs one of the shirts, holds it up to her and...IT FITS. There is something really really wrong in the world, wrong with the clothing industry when a 48 pound girl can wear a shirt made for a grown women. It's not like the shirt is too big either----the shirt FITS. And what is even worse---the shirt she tried on was not a fluke. She could wear a whole bunch of them. I am not a monkey women hot bodied 40 year old. However I am not morbidly obese either. But while I used to wear a size 6 or size 8-----I now find myself having to purchase larger sizes because the sizes I used to wear...SHRUNK. Has this happened to anyone else? Have I gone mad? Or is the fashion industry just out-of-it's mind? Let me know.

ugh, this is one of my biggest pet peeves. it's amazing to me that women think they have to look like 12 year old boys to be sexy. ugh, what happened to the plus size craze a few years back when people were starting to be convinced that meat on your bones was OK and sometimes pretty?
in a similar vein, i hate the size prejudice and the higher prices that bigger people have to pay. i am a plus sized gal (not morbidly obese but not a size 10 either) and it bugs me to no end that i have to buy a 3x in something that 5 years ago would have been a 1x or even simply a large.
i went to target last night to pick up some t-shirts for work. i picked up the "woman's" size for 11.99. as i was leaving the dressing room i see the SAME t-shirt but in maternity size for 9.99.
WTF? seriously. same shirt, cut, fabric, SIZE -- just a different catagory and I have to pay $2 extra?
in case you are wondering, i bought the maternity shirt.

Kellykat-
I hear you and it makes my blood just boil. Why should you have to buy a maternity shirt, make yourself feel kind of lousy just because the norm today is "concentration camp" thin? I think it is a total outrage paying $2 more for plus size too. To go even more off the deep end----why does it have to be 1x, 2x---isn't there a better way to say PLUS? If you can think of one, let me know. Thanks for the log in and let's start our own mini-revolt, shall we?

I still my size 6 clothing from years ago -- and luckily they still fit. HOWEVER, if I go out and buy the same brand/designer clothes in a size 6 -- they don't fit. It sucks.

that's funny, because i've had the exact opposite experience. i'm 5'2" and 100 pounds. i used to be just a regular small. then i became an xs. now i regularly have to buy things in xxs if it's available. some of my girlfriends who are the same size actually shop at the limited too (the limited brand, for girls). from my experience, americans are getting bigger, and the clothing industry is taking note.

I just wanted to send some energy particles out to those in the Gulf Coast. Doc Searls has a roundup of what I imagine can only be a small subset of the blogs talking about hurricane Katrina.

I am in love!!!! I just found your blog and I have to say that my friends are always telling me what a redneck I am. We consider redneck and white trash to be first cousins. I have two girls who are sure that they haven't inherited my redneck genetics. But they have. I do my best to not shame them, but I still do.
I don't know if this post is what I am supposed to do, but what the heck! I have built my life out of inappropriate behavior.
Keep it up. I've saved you to my favourites.

It is totally because of the cut of the style now. Everything has gotten smaller and it is depressing!

I hate it when my pants fit fine except for the fact that my panties are always showing out of the back! ARGH! lol

I hate the plus size stuff too, it's like you don't price all the different smaller "normal" sizes differently. Surely you use less fabric in a size 2 vs 14.

My 11 yo wears juniors size 11 clothes now, although admittedly she's very tall for her age (about same size as her 15yo sis- so they do share some).

Queen - you should turn on the comment/word confirmation thing in Blogger. It should help with the spam comments.

Hrpfh. I noticed like everyone else. Apparently, to make the fat people happier, they changed the sizes. I'm a size 12 right now, which is the same size I wore when I was 18, however I am 30 pounds heavier?! AND, you can see my undies out the back, which forced me to buy nicer ones instead of the grannies that I had creeping up my butt before. It's a conspiracy. Also, of a previous post, I am about to go to the "open house" thing at school... and we're all getting in the shower and changing our clothes first. I'm trying to lie to the teachers that we're a normal family. Ha, ha.

Good Lord there are a million spams on here! I always love to come back and look at the new comments on a post that I liked. I have two blogs, myself. One on Blogger and one on Blogdrive. I have a problem with Blogger because (from what I can't find!) you can't delete comments. Good idea to turn on the word verification thing!! I feel like you and I are an awful lot alike... well, from my point of view, anyway. :)

Everyonce and a while I gol clothes shopping for my wife to surprise her. I always go small-this way, if it's too small she's flattered and if it fits she's thankful. The styles I pick out are another issue all together...

I'm a new reader, and just wanted to let you know that the day after I read this post, I went to Wal-Mart for a new package of underwear. Size 8. When I got them home, I noticed the tag inside says "8/XL". What tha? A size 8 butt is XL? It's no wonder so many women have eating disorders if this is the standard! ~hydrogeek

According to reliable sources (Tyra Banks on America's Next Top Model), six 8 is considered PLUS SIZE in the modeling industry. However, size 8 is probably close to the average size of HEALTHY American woman. Stop complaining about pants not fitting your huge ass and lose some weight. It's not the pants that are the problem--it's all the food you put into your mouth.

Hi, new reader here... and ITA on your comments. I am 5'1" and a respectable size 6... I've always been an athlete and stay (for the most part, let's ignore the rapidly growing spare tire) fairly in shape. HOWEVER, I have boobs. 36C... which although is a little big FOR MY FRAME, still the AVERAGE breast size in America. So, why do they not make tops for women with breasts?? Why is every single cute shirt cut for a flat-chested girl? C'mon, America... real women have CURVES!

And ps, you CAN delete the unwanted comments. I'm not sure how, not having a blogger site myself, but I've had a couple of friends who got spammed and they deleted.

I take my daughter to punk rock shows (and I don't think this is a strictly punk rock thing) where they sell Youth Medium and Youth Large t-shirts as women's sizes... and these shirts fit my 10-year-old daughter because (shockingly) she is a Youth.

Jenn.... I have the same issue. I've been reading these comments and thinking WTF? It's the exact opposite for me. I'm 5'5 and 123 lbs. Have been since high school (I'm 25 now.) I am a small-framed girl. When I was buying things in S or a size 4/5, most of the time now I find myself fitting into XS and sizes 1/2. I have been wearing size 27 waist jeans since high school. Well, I bought a pair from Warehouse One and I had to get a 24. Don't think I've EVER been a 24. My first style pick the 24 was too big and that's the smallest they come.
That's ridiculous. yes I am thin, but I am FAR from even being "skinny".
I too, believe that sizes seem to be getting larger, in correlation to society's women getting larger.

Is it possible that shirts are getting smaller while pants get bigger? I have no butt and big boobs, and I can never find a shirt to wear that doesn't gap or stretch waaay out, but I'm usually swimming in what used to be the right size pants. Has the fashion industry decided that everyone's a pear with narrow shoulders?

Nto be condescending, but just curious...are people that say they are the same weight/build but now wear a smaller numerical size still shopping at the stores and departments as in high school or college? Because everyone wears a smaller numerical size from, say, Dillard's ladies than from Wet Seal. It isn't really reliable if you have completely switched genres/stores, so I am interested to know.

Sizes have changed drastically. Face it. I think the biggest part is who we compare ourselves to. For example, I am 29, stay-at-home mom to a toddler, a wife who loves to cook... But no let me think about who I see around town and envy their figures. HMMM. They are college sorority girls (as I was, too) and/or clubbers (as I was, too) and/or alternative little rockers (as I was, too) who have time to work out, time to go out dancing at night, live on beer and baby carrots and wheat thins...AND have never been pregnant and comfortable in a romantic relationship. And that is why, in the end, I really do love my 12-in-the-womens-department-but-16-at-Old-Navy self! Now if they would just make those 16 to where they didn't shrink two sizes if I forget and dry them! :)

If I were to compare myself to other women in my same scenario, I would not be the least bit out of place.

Regardless, props on your blog. I love it!

in response to the question of a woman who is comparing Wet Seal to Dillards Ladies sizing:

1st off.. both of those stores are so totally WT.

2nd... i too have noticed sizing getting smaller. i'm XS at wet seal, and i can't even wear anything from the Dillards Ladies dept... which makes shopping for professional work clothes a real challenge let me tell ya.

yeah, i'm skinny. but i'm also tall... so there are plenty of women tinier than me. where the heck do they shop?

my 12 year old was told by her doctor that she's obese. the girl is almost as tall as me (i'm 5'7") and wears a 7 in junior's. she's long been out of the girl's department. this thing that the nasty doctor told her traumatized her for a while, but she's realizing now that she's just dropped dead gorgeous. :)

this year, she started 7th grade. she's got BOOBS. she's aware that her body has developed in some ways earlier than her peers, and she's okay with that. but that self-comfort had to come from home, you know? she's not going to get that out there. girls nowadays are vicious little bitches. there was this group last year that told her that she couldn't hang around them unless she dropped to a size zero!

great entry. :)

Considering the issues that so many people in this country have with weight, any extra incentive (including the cost of clothing) for people to get in decent, healthy shape, is completely reasonable. "Fat" thirty years ago was significantly smaller than it is today. And now people are fighting for fatty's rights. Psh.

For the comment on underwear size--don't feel bad, they never match clothes sizes. I wear 10 jeans and 7 underwear--and they are considered XL in some brands.

I've enjoyed reading the posts, and I just had to comment. My 11yr old is starting to grow out of some of the girl XL's. Too many of them are made to be fitted, and at that stage of early development that is more a source of embarrassment than anything else, with bras and undershirts showing, etc. I decided to explore the juniors departments, and I was horrified to find out that a little girl's XL, even the tight, fitted ones, are bigger than a junior's medium! Why at the stage in a teen's life when they are most worried about body image, should they have to go straight from little girl to 'large' teen? What a nasty mind game to give them body/esteem issues! It makes me sick!

I know!! It's completely retarded!!! You can't even tell the difference between girls and juniors shirts because they fit exactly the same. I went straight from a girls' extra-large to a juniors extra-large (and no, I didn't grow a bunch at the time that I moved up to the juniors)!! I'm 15 and I usually don't even bother with the juniors. Since I've outgrown almost all girls' shirts, I just shop in the girls plus sizes...they fit waaay better than anything in the juniors! It's also ridiculous how long they make jeans...I still can't wear any jeans in the juniors or womens. I'm only 5'0" tall, and I know that's really short, but it looks like you would have to be at least 5'5" or so to wear any juniors jeans! Geez, not everyone is that tall! It's kind of embarrassing that I'm in high school now and still shopping in the kids section for jeans. Oh well. Hopefully one day this skin-tight shirts and made-for-amazons-pants craze will end!
